Our History

We are the second oldest Episcopal Church in Indiana,
located in historic Madison on the banks of the Ohio River.
In July of 1835, a few citizens of Madison, Indiana "friendly to the Protestant Episcopal Church met to draft resolutions and obtain information in regard to raising a church" The results of that meeting were favorable, and Christ Episcopal Church was begun. On October 31,1848, The Right Reverend Jackson Kemper, first Bishop of Indiana, officiated at the laying of the cornerstone for the present church building. The Church, a fine example of Gothic Revival architecture designed by W. Russell West, was consecrated February 8, 1850 by the Right Reverend George Upfold, second Bishop of Indiana.
The East Windows of Christ Church are some of the oldest examples of American stained glass still in their original setting. The three Lancets were created by the Miller Brothers of Cincinnati, Ohio for Christ Church in 1850. Above them is the round Christ window created that same year by the Hannon Company of Pittsburg, PA.
We have now completed our restoration project. There was a celebration of the completion and a rededication of the windows on February 22, 2006. A new window for the Sacristy, the only truly new window for Christ Church in over 100 years, was designed and created by John Clark of the Wardell Studio. It was installed in December of 2005 in Memory of William L. Draper and his wife, Mildred Thorp Draper. It is shown on the right below:
